The ‘Playschool Controversy’ has launched the ABC into the news again after a story about a girl with 2 mums was broadcast last week. The Federal government has been up in arms about it, claiming the ABC is politicizing the show. But Claire Henderson, Head of Children’s television at the ABC, defended the segment saying it “showed one of the many types of family groups that exist in Australia today.” Considering the Liberal government’s views on same-sex rights, it’s not surprising they’re having kittens over a family that doesn’t fit the nuclear model… Yesterday Prime Minister John Howard accused the ABC of having an underlying agenda and said broadcasting such a segment was “foolish”. While Mark Latham hasn’t said a great deal, his comments back up the Prime Minister’s approach of family values being the domain of family – not something to be broadcast on tv. While the moralists jump up and down, other groups in the community are asking whether this outrage is justified. Cinnamon Nippard caught up with Rodney Croome, spokesperson for the Equal Rights Network.
