The Federal Government fulfilled an election commitment today, appointing Australia’s first threatened species commissioner. Public servant and former diplomat Gregory Andrews has been tasked with slowing the nation’s animal extinction rate, which is one of the highest in the world. Environmental groups are hopeful Mr Andrews will bring renewed focus to conservation efforts, but questions remain over the position’s power, independence and funding.
