A new poll shows young people in Australia are less enamored with democracy than our political leadership would want us to be. What these simple poll results do not explore is why young people are disengaging from the democratic process. Almost a quarter of respondents aged under 30 to a Lowy Institute poll published today answered that “for someone like me, it doesn’t matter what kind of government we have.” 37 per cent say forms of government other than democracy can be best.
