In the 1930s William Cooper and the Australian Aborigines’ League fought a passionate struggle against dispossession, displacement and the denial of rights Through petitions to government, letters to organisations and entreaties to friends, they sought greater rights for indigenous Australians, and in particular the right to citizenship in their own country. Their story is told in ”Thinking Black”, a new book which grew out of research into Aboriginal History and Civil Rights by Bain Attwood and Andrew Markus. Cinnamon Nippard spoke to Bain Attwood, Assoc Professor of History at Monash University.
