Australian troops may soon be on their way to Iraq, as the government ramps up support support for Kurdish fighters in the region. The troops will be acting in a training capacity, as just one part of the global commitment to arm and reinforce friendly fighters in the conflict against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

But the Kurds and the West do not have such a friendly history. The PKK, a Kurdish nationalist group, has been fighting for Kurdish independence for decades, and is listed by the Australian government, as well as the US and NATO, as a terrorist organisation. So why has the West decided to side with the Kurds now?
