It was World Bee Day on Saturday 20 May 2023, and organisations are spreading awareness and knowledge of the intrinsic role of bees in our environments and everyday lives.

Around 75 percent of the world’s crops – which produce fruits and other seeds for human consumption – depend, at least in part, on pollinators including bees. Pollination is essential for the maintenance of plant biodiversity, and the survival of our ecosystems. But advocates claim there is no awareness of these impacts, and greater societal and government support is needed to ensure the protection of Australian honey bees, and growth and development of the bee industry.

The Wire’s Aryana Mohmood spoke with State Secretary of the Queensland Beekeepers Association (QBA), Jo Martin, about the role bees play in our environments and everyday lives.
