Gunns forestry enterprise was big. It was the largest employer in Tasmania and had a stake in pulp and paper mills around the country. CEO John Gay wielded power equal only to the Tasmanian Premier. But the announcement of plans to develop a pulp mill in the Tamar valley took the company ultimately from boom to bust, with more than a few political corpses along the way. The story is a David and Goliath battle of epic proportions with as many villains as there were heroes in the fight to save Tasmania’s environment – and its reputation.
