According to Federal Government legislation in 2002, a pregnant woman flying out of the country could be considered a criminal, as part of original restrictions prohibiting the export of human embryos. Now in 2006, while the laws have been revised, women and couples are still banned from taking thier embryos overseas for health, medical or reproductive reasons, unless the Minister for Customs, Chris Ellison, exempts them himself. The Wire’s Sasha Pavey spoke to Senator Natasha Stott Despoja and Democrats Spokesperson for the Status of Women, about what she calls a “quirky issue”.
