The rapid growth in the number of long-nosed fur seals in south-eastern South Australia has provoked calls to cull the endangered species. Liberal MP Adrian Pederick recently caused an furore when he moved a motion in state parliament to cull the fur seals. Sumner believes the seals are killing the main local totem, the pelican. He says the seals have never lived in the Coorong before, and they are damaging the environment.
