British Prime Minister Tony Blair will mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain by making a statement of regret today. But, like John Howard’s response to the stolen generations, Tony Blair is expected to stop short of making a full apology for Britain’s role in the slave trade. Sophie Gyles spoke to Dr Ben Wellings, Convenor of European Studies at the Australian National University about the politics of saying sorry in Britain and Australia and Jackie Huggins, Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia.
