“If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner”. These words by Nelson Mandela have been the guiding principles for Mary McAleese, who is delivering the Nelson Mandela lecture for the Hawke Centre in Adelaide. In her role as as President of Ireland from 1997 until 2011, she was tasked with guiding a country at war with itself through a path of negotiation to find peace. Now in 2014 McAleese says Mandela’s advice should be front and centre in a world of escalating conflict.
