The Pacific: not a safe place to be a woman
Two in every three women in the Pacific will experience physical or sexual violence in their life time. Last week UN Women Australia launched their Spring Campaign to end endemic levels of violence against Women in the Pacific. While Julia Gillard was swapping rubgy jerseys with New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, the Pacific Island Forum came to a close not with a bang, but a whimper. One of the greatest issues facing the region is the fact that women are more likely to experience physical or sexual violence here, than almost anywhere else on Earth. While climate change and fishing were promised huge international contributions, violence against women went largely ignored.
