The other side of Sue Gordon
West Australian Magistrate Sue Gordon is best known for her role in investigating family violence and child abuse in indigenous communities. Magistrate Gordon’s findings from the investigation now known as the Gordon Inquiry, have since been identified by the state government as priority initiatives. The Government is now taking up the challenge to help prevent abuse by strengthening responses to violence, and increasing safety and sustainability in communities. But Magistrate Gordon has also been making more personal gains. She is an important force within the group who call themselves Sister Kate’s 1934-1963 incorporated. Like many other indigenous Australians, Magistrate Gordon is a member of the stolen generation. She grew up in the children’s home known as Sister Kate’s. Mrs Gordon and the other former residents are now occupied with leasing the site to develop an aged care facility – enabling older members to live out their final years once again be with the only family they’ve ever known.
