The long road to the dialysis machine
Kidney disease is a huge issue in remote Aboriginal communities, not just a health issue but also a logistical one. Anyone who needs dialysis has to travel hundreds of kilometres to a renal unit, and it’s a situation that doesn’t change. At the moment its even worse if you’re in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara lands in the north of South Australia – kidney patients there are actually a lot closer to Alice Springs but are having to travel 1500 kilometres to Port Augusta and Adelaide to get hooked up to a life saving dialysis machine,… Mona Tur is an Antikirinya elder. She says its been a problem for many years and nothing has ever been done to set up units out in the lands.
