The implications of the “Poowoomba” referendum vote
Over the weekend the residents of Toowomba in Queensland voted overwhelmingly against the move to recycle water form the town’s sewerage into drinking water. But with Queensland and the rest of our parched brown land running out of options, what viable alternatives are there to recycling the water sources we have? With the referendum on recycled water not passing the smell test, Queensland must now come to grips with where to go next. But the no vote comes as another town is also considering recycled water. The town of Goulbourn in NSW is grappling with the issue of massive water shortages and how to cope with their very limited dam supplies. And as The Wire reports, the Federal Government has taken a very different approach to the issue of how that town will cope with its water shortages.
