As of today, all venues must mandate that all customers scan a QR Code in order to track Covid-19. The code prompts a survey where one’s details and best form of contact are recorded and sent to the government.

It works like a barcode, and most people will be able to scan the QR code through the camera on their smartphone. Heavy fines will be given to businesses who do not comply with this new rule.

However, around 10% of people do not own a smartphone, particularly the elderly – Australia’s population group most effected by Covid-19. The new rule also does not consider those in areas of poor internet coverage – how will they comply to the rule if they physically cannot use the QR code system?
