The closure of Honeymoon Uranium Mine in South Australia has prompted calls from the Australian Conservation Foundation for a review of the nuclear power industry to determine whether the risks outweigh the benefits.

The fall out of the Fukushima Nuclear reactor disaster in Japan revived significant concerns about the safety of nuclear power and uranium mining. At the time the UN Secretary General called upon many countries, including Australia to complete an in-depth independent review of the industry amid safety concerns. The review is yet to happen and the ACF says it is of vital importance.
