Raising the profile of post-natal depression could save Australia millions each year. In a report released today, mental health activist organization Beyond Blue detailed the huge costs and far-reaching effects of perinatal mental illness. Beyond the debilitating personal impact of this disease, experts say there are significant social and economic costs that go unrecognised. With up to 15% of new mothers estimated to experience depression, Dr. Nicole Hyatt hopes the report will raise the profile of the disease which without treatment and early intervention could cost Australia over 500 million annually.
