Aboriginal traditional owners are almost certain that uranium mined at Jabiluka in the Northern Territory contributed to the current crisis in Fukushima, and they are determined not to be a part of the nuclear industry. Yvonne Margarula, the senior traditional Aboriginal owner of that part of Kakadu, wrote to United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, expressing the Mirarr people’s sadness about what has happened in Japan. The Mirarr people are now stepping up the fight to get the Jabiluka uranium deposit to remain undeveloped and become part of Kakadu national park.
