Australians may be forced to find a new search engine.

In a Senate hearing today, Mel Silva, the managing director of Google Australia, said that the Google search function might be disabled for Australians if the proposed News Media Bargaining Code is passed into law.

Australia is on the cutting edge of trying to regulate Google and Facebook to generate revenue for public interest journalism that has been lost in part due to advertising revenue going to these digital platforms.
