When historian Henry Reynold’s book The Whispering in our Hearts was published 20 years ago it marked the rise of the ‘culture wars’ – the two very different accounts of white settlement in Australia. His history retold the story of settlement through the first hand accounts of early officials and settlers who were deeply concerned about stolen land, violence and the breaking up of Aboriginal families and traditions. His updated version The Whispering in our Hearts Revisited takes the story through to the present day and the Uluru statement and asks how real reconciliation of Australia’s colonial history can occur.
