The new president also faces division within his own political party, and a legislature of vested interests. Jakowi, as he is commonly known, is expected to face difficulties with passing reform legislation in Indonesia, alongside dealing with a strained relationship with Australia.

Indonesia’s new president, Joko Widodo has no experience in foreign affairs, yet he has already made it clear he does not support Australia’s asylum seeker policy. Widodo will be sworn into presidency in September this year, promising attention to welfare issues, a crackdown on corruption, and greater discussion with Australia in regards to asylum seeker policy.
