50 years ago today the first atomic bomb test took place at Maralinga in South Australia’s west. Friends of the Earth in Adelaide thought that it was a good day to reflect on Australia’s involvement in the global nuclear industry. Today, in a mock red carpet ceremony, they presented the mining giant BHP Billiton with the Blinky Award. The award, a three-eyed goldfish, is intended to draw attention to the environmental impacts of the mining and nuclear industries. Friends of the Earth Adelaide activist Sophie Green explained to Ela Smith how the group intended to honour the anniversary
