50 years ago today the first atomic bomb test took place at Maralinga in South Australia’s west. Friends of the Earth in Adelaide thought that it was a good day to reflect on Australia’s involvement in the global nuclear industry. Today, in a mock red carpet ceremony, they presented the mining giant BHP Billiton with the Blinky Award. The award, a three-eyed goldfish, is intended to draw attention to the environmental impacts of the mining and nuclear industries.
