Testing kiddies for drugs
A group supporting families affected by drugs has hit out today at suggestions that school children in South Australia should be tested on a regular basis for illegal drugs. The campaign has been waged by newly-elected South Australian MP Ann Bressington whose own daughter died of a drug overdose in 1998. Ms Bressington wants all kids over the age of 14 to under go a mouth swab drug test at school, twice a year. If they test positive, they could be suspended for up to five days. But Family Drug Support disagrees with this approach. They’re a non-profit counseling group that aims to provide support for those families that have a loved one addicted to drugs. Acting CEO of the group, Theo Chang, spoke earlier to The Wire about his concerns with the proposal.
