Teachers amongst those targeted in continued Bahrain crackdown
When the Arab Spring swept through the Middle East last year, pro-democracy advocates and civilians in the small nation of Bahrain took to the streets. In the widespread crackdown that followed, opponents of the Al-Khalifa monarchy faced unprecedented violence, arrest, torture and intimidation by their government. The Bahrain Teachers Union was at the forefront of the uprising, with many teachers and both the President and Vice-president of the union since arrested as a result.
Hana Husain was a high school teacher in Bahrain, who witnessed the crackdown by security forces target her colleagues and students. She has since been granted asylum in Australia, and is using her freedom to continue to speak out against the ongoing political oppression of her country.
