The announcement of a prospective tax hike for a packet of cigarettes upward of 10% has been applauded by bodies such as the Cancer Council for its efforts in smoking cessation in Australia. While others argue that the high prices are something that smokers will eventually adapt to, it has been tipped as a winning plan for all concnerned, even the smokers themselves. So if it goes ahead, will we see the demise in smoking numbers or will it simply give the government some much needed extra funds?
