Tax Cut Polls
A slew of national polls has shown that the average Aussie would prefer government spending to be on essential services rather than tax cuts. In a recent poll conducted by Roy Morgan research for the National Welfare Rights Network, respondents were asked whether they’d prefer a tax cut of $5 a week for everybody, or more spending on areas like health, education, aged care, homelessness and relief from poverty. Overwhelmingly, the results showed a preference for services. The Morgan poll supported recent ACNielson surveys in showing that there’s also strong support for tax breaks specifically for low-income earners, rather than tax-cuts across-the-board. These results seem to challenge the traditional notion that tax cuts are a surefire vote-winner among the public, especially among the Coalition’s traditional constituency of the fifty-plus bracket.
