Tasmania’s forests face a bleak future

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has told a group of forestry professionals he wants the timber industry to be an important part of Australia’s future. Mr Abbott says we have ‘too much locked up forest’ and he plans to undo that by requesting removal of World Heritage Protection in some areas of Tasmania.
It is a move that is at odds with the hopes of the local industry there. But members of the Australia Institute think tank say the government is subsidising and supporting an industry that offers little and should be left to fend for itself.
