Australian Tamils are protesting in Canberra today calling on the Australian Government to put pressure on the Sri Lankan military. They are claiming that the Sri Lankan government is continuing to bomb declared “no-fire safe zones”, where Tamil civilians are living. The call comes after months of heighten conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, also known as LTTE or the Tamil Tigers. In the three months of this year alone, an estimated 3500 Tamil civilians have been killed both in and out of these zones. Protest groups are demanding that the Sri Lankan government enter into a permanent ceasefire with this separarist group.
