Tackling violence against Indigenous women
Violence being perpetrated by Indigenous men against Indigenous women and children in Australian remains a disturbing and contentious issue. But a visiting United Nations expert has told a forum today that the answer lies in learning more about Indigenous culture and empowering Indigenous women within their own communities. Her comments come as author Louis Nowra has released a booked called “Bad Dreaming”, which in part claims that Indigenous customary law has been used by Indigenous men to justify violence perpetrated against Indigenous women. This report begins with comments by the UN’s Victoria Tauli Corpuz, speaking about the work the UN is doing in Indigenous communities around Asia to combat domestic violence.
