Professor Rob Roggema of the University of Technology Sydney claims that the warming oceans off the coast of Sydney may one day lead to the city being hit by a cyclone. In order to combat this threat he has come up with a radical suggestion to build an artificial reef, which he has termed ‘the Sydney Barrier Reef’.

This artificial construction could help to minimise the impact that a natural disaster could have on the city. But are we only damaging the environment by interfering with it further?
