Australian families are paying $1300 a year more than two years ago for the same groceries. Despite a prolonged supermarket war which is meant to have lowered prices, customers report they are actually paying more at the till. A new analysis has found the price of an average basket of groceries in a Coles or Woolworths store has jumped 16 per cent since 2009. The consumer group Choice says it’s difficult to know if the major chains are profiteering.
