A gang riot at Melbourne’s annual Moomba festival has resulted in a racist backlash on social media, with the Australian-South Sudanese community feeling unfairly targeted by mainstream media coverage. Refugee rights groups say it is important to wait until facts are confirmed before making public allegations about visible minorities engaging in violent acts. They also say the South Sudanese community, a group who have contributed so much to Australia in the short time they have been here, need more support and respect.
