The WORLD FOOD PROGRAM is today predicting a humanitarian disaster in SUDAN because the onset of the rainy season and floods will prevent them from distributing food in the war torn region. The latest fighting is between African Muslims and Arab Muslims. Since the Islamic Fundamentalists took over the capital Khartoum, Arab militias, or janjaweed have been destroying villages, looting, killing, and raping African Muslims. UN officials estimate that up to 30,000 people have been killed in the long-running conflict in Western Sudan, and there are now over 1 million refugees within Darfur, while another 250,000 have fled to neighbouring Chad. Some observers are comparing the situation to the genocide that occurred in Rwanda 10 years ago. The US is threatening sanction against Sudanese officials to pressure them into addressing the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, but is this action too late? Cinnamon Nippard spoke to Safi Hareer, is the representative Dafurian Community Union in Western Sudan, in Sydney, and Megan Chisolm, Senior Emergencies Officer at CARE Australia.
