Research shows one in nine Australian women will be diagnosed with endometriosis by the time they reach the age of 44.
The findings from researchers at the University of Queensland are the first in the country to show prevalence of the disorder among Australian women.
Previously researchers and health professionals had to rely on statistics from overseas to get an idea of how widespread the disorder was.
Other findings show there were over 34 000 endometriosis-related hospitalisations last year, with women aged 35-39 being hospitalised at the highest rate.
