Up to 80 per cent of fishers aren’t reporting poaching on the great barrier reef because they don’t understand what’s illegal to take or how to report it.

The findings, from a survey of 2000 fishers around the world, shows underreporting remains an issue, particularly in developing countries.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority has responded to the research calling on the public to call its hotline and report illegal fishing.
