Students’ union cautiously welcomes re-introduction of compulsory fees

University students may have to pay compulsory fees for various campus services under a new Rudd government plan. Similar fees were abolished by the Howard government which opposed compulsory student unionism. The Rudd government now plans to reinstate compulsory fees of up to $250 per year, but the money my not be used for political advocacy by student unions. The National Union of Students has cautiously welcomed the proposal, saying numerous student services have been downgraded since Howard cancelled union fees.
