For much on the twentieth century half-caste aboriginal children were taken from their families and raised in missions, orphanages and foster homes around Australia. It’s generally acknowledged as a tragic policy but what was life actually like on these missions? Jay Lamey went to National Sorry Day celebrations in Adelaide to hear some stories from people who lived through it. He found out that all the experiences varied, from tragic tales of loss to idle childhoods of pleasure.
