Stolen generations the subject of an exhibition
The Stolen Generations are an example of government policy gone wrong. With so many indigenous communities continuing to be at a disadvantage, the influence of government policy needs to be assessed and the failures acknowledged and remembered. Last week the New South Wales Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Milton Orkopoulos announced the forty-five thousand dollar funding for a multi-media exhibition, honouring the Stolen Generations. It is to be funded through the New South Wales Government Heritage Incentives Programme and looks at the history and experiences of the Aboriginal children that were forcibly taken from their families. The Wire spoke with Mr Orkopoulos about the plans for this funding. But first we hear from Vincent Wenberg, a member of the Stolen Generations, as he tells his story of being taken from his mother in 1944.
