Last Saturday the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety announced that couples in Victoria now have the option to say that they’re in a “domestic relationship” on their children’s birth certificates.

It’s a move that allows many couples to more accurately describe their relationship status in a legal document. However, parents will need to ensure that they understand what a “domestic relationship” is before they sign the legal document to confirm that they’re in one, in case the relationship breaks down and the documentation needs to be used for settling any assets further down the track.
