A court in Sri Lanka has sentenced a magazine editor to 20 years in jail, the maximum under the country’s tough anti-terrorism laws. He’s been charged for writing articles critical of the Government’s offensive against the Tamil Tigers, and ironically, for using racially divisive language and promoting disharmony. The conviction of a journalist has naturally drawn the media’s gaze back toward Sri Lanka, months after the Government declared victory against the Tigers. Hundreds of thousands remain interned in camps, hidden from human rights monitors. Due to concerted intimidation and control from the Sri Lankan Government, few images have emerged from the camps, and little information is known.
