Racial tensions between groups and the lack of social activities for youth has seen the development of a sports centre in Darwin, teaching young men and women self defense. The MAJIMAP Choice Aboriginal Corporation who run various programs in the area of sports and recreation, built the centre to engage youth in a positive way. Known as the Underground Centre, it opened on the 1st of August and has Indigenous instructors providing weekly classes. MAJIMAP Choice Aboriginal Corporation Manager Michael Mullins, said the centre was not originally focusing on racial tension between African and Indigenous youth in the northern suburbs of Darwin.
