A new report by Greenpeace into customary land leases in Papua New Guinea has labelled the scheme a “land grab”. The report says that instead of improving the rights of local landowners, foreign owned companies have used these leases to gain access to the land.

Greenpeace says a Forestry Act loophole has also meant that these leases have resulted in increased deforestation, with communities receiving little or no benefits.
