It’s no small thing for the United Nations to interfere in domestic policy, and yet last week it fielded calls from Australian Aboriginal leaders to do just that. A UN Indigenous Issues forum heard vocal opposition to the Federal Government’s ‘Stronger Futures’ legislation, and UN Peacekeepers were asked to intervene after police and protestors clashed over Woodside Petroleum’s gas project at James Price Point. And on one side, these calls are intertwined with a new push for Aboriginal sovereignty.
