South Australia will become the first jurisdiction to abolish confessional exemption for priests not reporting sexual abuse.
New laws to take effect in October will mean priests who hear confessions about child abuse will have a mandatory obligation to report to police.
A maximum fine of $10,000 will be applied if priests fail to report abuse.
