The African National Congress is expected to win its third term in office when South Africans go to the polls on April 14. In a show of support for the party that brought about an end to apartheid ten years ago, 80 thousand people including Nelson Mandela, rallied in Soweto on the weekend. But with the country facing an HIV/AIDS epidemic, high levels of crime and unemployment – 70% in some provinces – this anniversary year has generated criticism of the country’s lack of social and economic progress, and raised questions about the ANC’s ability to deliver results in the future. Dr David Dorward is the director of La Trobe’s African Research Institute, he explained to Paulina Vidal why the ANC will be voted back in despite the dissatisfaction of many South Africans.
