Cumeragunga is a name familiar to many Aboriginal Australians… it’s where the Yorta Yorta people took their destiny into their own hands and walked off the mission station, in 1939, in protest against unfair conditions. It’s also where the story of Pecan Summer, Australia’s first Indigenous opera, begins. Australian soprano Deborah Cheetham AO, a Yorta Yorta woman and the writer and composer of Pecan Summer, has brought the opera to Adelaide for the first time.
