Many of the biggest stories of 2012 came from Twitter, as journalists increasingly monitor social media to see what people are talking about. Punch writer Tory Shepherd nominates Julia Gillard’s ‘misogyny’ speech as one of the year’s biggest stories.
It was one story that many journalists didn’t think particularly important until they saw that social media was going wild for it. Shepherd says social media has also increased coverage of international issues.
