Sleep-inducing detail of tax system masks big inequities
The government’s tax forum kicked off in Canberra today. The idea of talking about tax for two days may send most of us to sleep, and indeed there are reports that Bob Katter had a bit of a snooze during the proceedings of the tax summit today. But some organizations concerned with social justice are saying that we should be paying much more attention to the tax loopholes being used by wealthier Australians.
They say that the complexity of the tax system and the superannuation system mean that many people are unaware just how little tax wealthier Australians are paying.A number of delegates attending the invite-only tax forum have said superannuation is taxed in a highly inequitable way, giving large tax concessions to wealthy individuals.
