Fifteen people have been infected after reportedly coming into contact with diseased fish in the port city of Gladstone on the Queensland central coast. For months, local fishermen have been catching fish with infected sores and milky white eyes.

The Queensland government responded by imposing a three week ban on commercial fishing while they carry out tests on the sick fish. Initial results show a fungal disease is causing the abnormalities, but there is debate about whether it was brought on by natural factors. Some claim the harbour’s Liquefied Natural Gas development, and the dredging that accompanies it, is making fish vulnerable.
